Concord

Concord has come a long way since its incorporation in 1905 as a tiny farming community of about 700 residents. Today Concord boasts a population of more than 121,500 and is the largest city in Contra Costa County.

Concord is an important commercial center in the East Bay, with easy access to San Francisco and Sacramento. A skilled workforce and the City's proactive approach to business development, relocation, and expansion have made Concord home to some of the nation's most prominent companies including Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Siemans and Systron Donner. The Contra Costa Software Business Incubator is based in Concord, as well as a growing number of bio-tech and high-tech companies.

"Concord, Where Families Come First" is the theme of a recent campaign to raise awareness about the high quality of life and many family-friendly options available to residents. These include a wide range of housing choices, 23 parks, an 18-hole golf course, a water theme park, excellent adult education opportunities, a local commuter airport and access to Mt. Diablo State Park. The Chronicle Pavilion at Concord brings world-class entertainment to the Bay Area in a beautiful outdoor setting in the Mt. Diablo foothills.

Residents appreciate the selection of stores at Sun Valley Mall and the Willows Shopping Center, as well as the two newest additions to the retail community, the Expo Design Center and Costco. Concord's historic downtown draws more than 100,000 people each year for activities in Todos Santos Plaza. A 14-screen Brenden movie complex, new parking center and a multitude of restaurants make the area a family favorite for a night out.

Concord's 26 elementary schools, 8 intermediate schools and 7 high schools are part of Mount Diablo Unified School District, a highly rated district whose schools at all levels rank among the state's top 15 percent based on test scores. In 1992 California State University, Hayward opened a satellite campus off Ygnacio Valley Road. It offers upper division (junior and senior) classes and master’s degree courses. This campus has made higher education more accessible to local residents and gave Concord a financial boost. Diablo Valley College, a highly rated community college, is located in Pleasant Hill, a short drive from downtown Concord.
